La Embajadora Beryl Rose Sisulu y el Embajador de la República Árabe Saharaui Democrática, Excmo. Sr. Mujtar Leboihi.

Ambassador Beryl Rose Sisulu paid a courtesy call on the Ambassador of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic, H.E. Mr. Mujtar Leboihi. The diplomats followed up on the supportive discussions reiterated by South Africa’s Deputy Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, H.E. Mr. Alvin Botes, to the Ambassador of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic, H.E. Mr. Mujtar Leboihi in August 2023.

Among various issues, they agreed to strengthen with their presence over the coming years the activities and initiatives of the African Group of Ambassadors Accredited to Mexico (Africa Group) on Human Rights, Public, Parliamentary and Economic Diplomacy, among many others.

Formal diplomatic relations between Western Sahara (SADR) and the Republic of South Africa were established at ambassadorial level in 2004, during the government of President Thabo Mbeki.

South Africa provides political support and humanitarian assistance to the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic.

South Africa and Mexico are among the 84 countries that have so far recognised SADR.

In the words of President Cyril Ramaphosa, «We enjoy fraternal bilateral relations anchored not only in our shared history of struggle, but also in our common vision of self-determination for the people of Western Sahara.

We recall with pride that we signed a Memorandum of Understanding on Diplomatic Consultations in 2013.

Since then, we have had regular strategic exchanges focused on issues of mutual interest at regional, continental and international levels.
Our strategic relationship has ensured that we have been able to cooperate within the African Union on major continental issues, including upholding the Constitutive Act of the African Union.»
